Cottage Cheese Shrimp Rangoon Wontons

Crispy, golden wontons filled with shrimp? You already know these are going to be good. These Cottage Cheese Shrimp Rangoon Wontons take everything you love about a classic rangoon and give it a lighter, protein-packed twist.

Instead of cream cheese, we’re whipping cottage cheese until it’s smooth and using it as the base for the filling. It keeps things creamy and tangy and you can’t even tell the difference. Scoop it into crispy wonton cups, nestle a juicy shrimp into each one, and enjoy! No frying, no mess – just the perfect bite for game day, bridal or baby showers, holiday parties, or anytime you need an easy, fancy looking appetizer.

Easy to Make, Impossible to Resist

When it comes to making appetizers for a crowd, we have two rules – they need to be easy to make and slightly addicting. Wontons sound fancy, but they’re actually super easy to make. Here’s how it goes:

1️⃣ Blend the Filling – Whip the cottage cheese until smooth, then mix in finely chopped shrimp, garlic, green onion, and a splash of soy sauce.
2️⃣ Bake and Sauté – Brush the wontons with a little oil, throw them in the oven, and bake until crispy and golden brown. At the same time, give your shrimp a quick toss in a skillet.
3️⃣ Fill & Fold – Add a small spoonful to each wonton wrapper, lightly wet the edges, and fold however you like—triangles, little pouches, whatever works. Just press them tight so they don’t open in the oven.

That’s it. No deep frying, no slaving over hot oil. Just easy, crispy Cottage Cheese Shrimp Rangoon Wontons that fit right in at your next gathering.

The Secret to That Creamy, Savory Filling

If you’ve ever had classic crab rangoon, you already know the drill: creamy, crunchy, with just the right balance of richness and freshness. But instead of crab, we’re using shrimp. And instead of cream cheese, we’re keeping things light and protein-packed with whipped cottage cheese.

It blends up perfectly smooth, gives the filling that creamy texture, and doesn’t overpower the flavors. And since cottage cheese has more protein than cream cheese, you get that satisfying bite without the heaviness.

This recipe works for just about any occasion. If you’re making a game-day spread, Cottage Cheese Shrimp Rangoon Wontons fit right in next to dips, wings, and all the usual favorites. For something more low-key, they make an easy appetizer for baby showers, bridal showers, or even holiday parties. Since they’re baked, they’re lighter than the usual deep-fried version, which makes them perfect for snacking without feeling too heavy.

What to Serve With Them

Sure, these wontons are great on their own, but they’re even better when paired with the right sides and dips.

  • Dipping Sauces: Sweet chili sauce, soy sauce with rice vinegar, sriracha mayo, or hoisin sauce all work perfectly.
  • Something Fresh: A simple cucumber salad or quick-pickled veggies balance out the crispy, creamy wontons.
  • More Apps: If you’re making these for a party, round out the spread with Cottage Cheese Taco Dip or Cottage Cheese Guacamole for even more easy-to-eat bites.

Can You Make Cottage Cheese Shrimp Rangoon Wontons Ahead of Time?

Yes! If you’re prepping for a party or gathering, you can absolutely make these ahead of time.

🕒 To prep in advance – Assemble the wontons a few hours before baking, place them on a tray, and keep them covered in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve, just pop them in the oven and bake as directed.

❄️ Storing leftovers – These are best fresh, but if you do have extras, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a 375°F oven for about 5 minutes until crisp again.

Since they’re baked, these don’t hold up well to freezing – the wonton wrappers tend to absorb moisture and lose their crispiness.

Tips for the Crispiest Baked Wontons

Press the wrappers gently, but snugly into the muffin tin – This helps them hold their shape while baking and creates enough space to add your filling.
Lightly brush with oil – Just a little on the edges will help them turn golden brown and extra crispy.
Bake before filling – Let the wonton cups bake first so they crisp up before adding the filling and shrimp.
Serve fresh – These are best right out of the oven while the wonton shells are at their crispiest.
